Blogging Your Way to Expertise

Believe it or not, you’re an expert. If you’ve spent any length of time doing something you’ve surely learned the ins and outs. You’re an authority on whatever it is you do best, whether it’s selling real estate, stocking shelves or building Legos. It simply comes with experience.

Most people don’t realize they’re an authority. No one has ever told them they’re an expert. But here’s the thing: Nobody is going to walk up to you and tell you that you’re an expert. You have to realize it yourself, claim the title for yourself and then constantly remind yourself that you are indeed an expert. Then all you have to do is prove it to the world.

Convincing the world you’re an expert is where most people give up. They don’t really believe it in the first place so how are they going to convince anyone else? But it doesn’t have to be that hard. All you really need to do is demonstrate your expertise. And one easy way to do that is by blogging.

Blogging is an ideal way to demonstrate your expertise and show that you’re an authority. It’s a simple way to demonstrate knowledge, to show off research and build up a vast wealth of content on a particular subject. It’s a body of work that proves to the world you know what you’re talking about. Not only does it establish you as an expert, but the growing collection of content will bring in more traffic and boost your site’s SEO, continuing to add to your authority.

Simply put, you can blog your way to being an expert. And that’s a powerful way to boost your business.

The basic act of blogging can prove that you’re an authority, but here are a few tips to back up that authority:

  1. Create an about page. Start with some basics about who you are and list your credentials. Focus on the things that establish your expertise. This can be things such as education (whether formal or informal) and experience. If you feel like you’re coming up short, be creative with your credentials. Reading every book in your field or being interviewed by the press aren’t thinks you’d normally think of, but they certainly establish your credentials.
  2. What do others say? Sometimes you can only say so much to prove your authority. Sometimes it’s easier to let others get your back. Add some testimonies to your about page.
  3. Use a photo. Your smiling, non-stock photo face is one way to prove that you’re legit. That photo says your site is backed by a real person sharing hard-won knowledge and not some spam-bot infested corner of the web.
  4. Write with personality. Give your copy a real, lively voice. Don’t write in stilted, corporate speak. Just because you’re an authority doesn’t mean you need to be boring.

But I’m No Expert!
Not yet convinced that you’re an authority? Fine, then start becoming one. Research your field and share what you find as you go. Make your blog a journal of your journey to expert status. Here are some samples of the kinds of posts you can write:

  • Lists of resources. As you’re doing your research you’ll come across all kinds of valuable resources. Collecting those resources into a single, scannable list is in itself a valuable resource.
  • Book reviews. Providing a list of helpful books is one thing, but reviewing those books and telling people which ones are worth their time, that’s gold.
  • Dos and don’ts. Giving people clear, direct advice about how to do (or not do) something is extremely helpful. And only an expert like you would know stuff like that.
  • Top 10 lists. This is another popular format. Plus, it takes some wide-reaching wisdom to compile the top ten of anything. Once again, you’re the expert.
  • Create a resource. Nothing cements your status as an expert like creating your own resource. Maybe it’s a PDF download or an ebook. It’s not technically a blog post, but is a valuable way to demonstrate your authority.
  • Interview other experts. Another solid way to build a body of expertise is to interview other experts. It’s authority by association. You need connections to land interviews so simply doing them adds to your sway, plus it’s more helpful content.

Blogging is a powerful way to prove that you’re an expert and begin reaping the benefits that come with being an authority in your field.

WordPress 3.3.2 Update Now Available

This past weekend, WordPress 3.3.2 was released into the wild. This is an important update because it fixes several security issues. Anyone running a WordPress-powered site should update immediately whenever a security patch is released. The leading cause of hacked WordPress websites are because of outdated and non-updated versions of WordPress.

It is also a good practice to always make a backup of your website prior to any major update/upgrade that you perform. BackupBuddy is the perfect solution to make sure you always have a secure backup prior to upgrading your WordPress installation. Not only can BackupBuddy create a full backup for you, it can also perform a security scan prior to backing up so that you can make sure you always have the highest quality backup available.

To learn more about this update and what security issues were addressed, please visit WordPress.org.

Side Note: If you are currently playing around with the WordPress 3.4 beta releases, Beta 4 was also released at the same time as the security update.

Be sure to check out the iThemes-sponsored “Lockdown WordPress: Security Tips from Sucuri” this Wednesday, April 25th @ 1:00pm. In this webinar, you’ll learn how to do basic garage cleaning on your WordPress site, what security hacks Sucuri is seeing infected and tips on helping reduce your site risk.

WordPress Without the Blog

As I’m sure most of you know, WordPress was originally built as a blogging platform. WordPress has continued to evolve over the years, however, and has developed into a robust Content Management System (CMS).

A web CMS is a software that:

  • Allows users to create a website easily without having to have any knowledge of HTML or CSS
  • Gives the user access to administrative tools to help run their site
  • Allows the administrator to assign “roles” to different site users
  • Allows the user to…well, manage content for their site

A blogging platform is essentially a specialized CMS focusing specifically on helping users to create blogs.

This Friday, April 20th, at 10 am (CDT) Benjamin is going to go into more detail on using WordPress as a CMS. He’ll show you the step-by-step process of creating a site for a client that has nothing to do with blogging… all powered by WordPress.  You’ll learn to utilize pages and widgets while hiding unnecessary areas of the backend of WordPress.

A Look Back at the First of the Dojo Courses

The new Dojo courses are a series of classes on various topics lead by “The Professor,” Benjamin Bradley, the first two series of which cover CSS and PHP.  Each of these courses will be 6-8 courses long and are built as modules, so the skill level of each (and your skill level, as well) will grow with each new lesson.

From how to align your image to using the z-index to layer images, Benjamin shows you how to style your images in the first of the CSS Dojo classes.

Here are some of the things learned in the CSS Dojo:

  • CSS is the “presentation layer” on the web
  • Any HTML tag (or “selector”) can be styled using CSS
  • The different background styles you can create using your image
  • How to create various hover effects on images (opacity, position, etc.)

In the first installment of the PHP Dojo, Benjamin explained what variables are and how to use them. He also touched on functions and how they work.

Here are some of the things learned in the PHP Dojo:

  • Variables are containers used to store information
  • The difference between “global” and “local” variables
  • A PHP function, at base level, is a “dictionary definition”
  • The different naming rules for variables

You can find replays of both the Dojo courses in the members’ library.  Not a WebDesign.com member yet?  Check out information on our different membership levels.

A Quick Look at Advanced SEO for 2012

Last Friday, Benjamin lunched with us while discussing SEO for 2012.

He started by reminding us that “Content is King” when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and that hasn’t changed. However, Benjamin primarily focused on Advanced SEO.

Advanced SEO is not:

  • How to write good content
  • How to get quality links
  • How to perform day-to-day optimization tasks
  • How to negotiate analytics
Those are all components of SEO, but Advanced SEO (or ASO) goes much deeper than that.  It has a lot to with being prepared for the future and any changes that may come along.

ASO is:

  • Understanding trends
  • Building resources
  • Utilizing metrics

Some of the things that are key to ASO for 2012 include:

  • Brand Value Farming – SEO does not build a brand, but it does enhance a brand through cultivation, leveraging and growing the brand.
  • Event and Strategic Response Planning – This means looking ahead, not just to client events, but also to be aware of new technologies that ASO partners should take advantage of.
  • Passive Networking and Social Utilization – ASO partners are always testing, trying new things, building new concepts and being ready for whats next.
  • “Life Boat Drills”  - Always be testing and looking for points of failure so that you can fix it quickly and put your clients in a position to capitalize on changes on the internet.
Be sure to watch the video to hear more on what Benjamin has to say about SEO for 2012 and check out more videos on SEO in the member library. Not a WebDesign.com member yet?  Check out the membership options!
