WordPress Without the Blog

As I’m sure most of you know, WordPress was originally built as a blogging platform. WordPress has continued to evolve over the years, however, and has developed into a robust Content Management System (CMS).

A web CMS is a software that:

  • Allows users to create a website easily without having to have any knowledge of HTML or CSS
  • Gives the user access to administrative tools to help run their site
  • Allows the administrator to assign “roles” to different site users
  • Allows the user to…well, manage content for their site

A blogging platform is essentially a specialized CMS focusing specifically on helping users to create blogs.

This Friday, April 20th, at 10 am (CDT) Benjamin is going to go into more detail on using WordPress as a CMS. He’ll show you the step-by-step process of creating a site for a client that has nothing to do with blogging… all powered by WordPress.  You’ll learn to utilize pages and widgets while hiding unnecessary areas of the backend of WordPress.

A Look Back at the First of the Dojo Courses

The new Dojo courses are a series of classes on various topics lead by “The Professor,” Benjamin Bradley, the first two series of which cover CSS and PHP.  Each of these courses will be 6-8 courses long and are built as modules, so the skill level of each (and your skill level, as well) will grow with each new lesson.

From how to align your image to using the z-index to layer images, Benjamin shows you how to style your images in the first of the CSS Dojo classes.

Here are some of the things learned in the CSS Dojo:

  • CSS is the “presentation layer” on the web
  • Any HTML tag (or “selector”) can be styled using CSS
  • The different background styles you can create using your image
  • How to create various hover effects on images (opacity, position, etc.)

In the first installment of the PHP Dojo, Benjamin explained what variables are and how to use them. He also touched on functions and how they work.

Here are some of the things learned in the PHP Dojo:

  • Variables are containers used to store information
  • The difference between “global” and “local” variables
  • A PHP function, at base level, is a “dictionary definition”
  • The different naming rules for variables

You can find replays of both the Dojo courses in the members’ library.  Not a WebDesign.com member yet?  Check out information on our different membership levels.

A Quick Look at Advanced SEO for 2012

Last Friday, Benjamin lunched with us while discussing SEO for 2012.

He started by reminding us that “Content is King” when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and that hasn’t changed. However, Benjamin primarily focused on Advanced SEO.

Advanced SEO is not:

  • How to write good content
  • How to get quality links
  • How to perform day-to-day optimization tasks
  • How to negotiate analytics
Those are all components of SEO, but Advanced SEO (or ASO) goes much deeper than that.  It has a lot to with being prepared for the future and any changes that may come along.

ASO is:

  • Understanding trends
  • Building resources
  • Utilizing metrics

Some of the things that are key to ASO for 2012 include:

  • Brand Value Farming – SEO does not build a brand, but it does enhance a brand through cultivation, leveraging and growing the brand.
  • Event and Strategic Response Planning – This means looking ahead, not just to client events, but also to be aware of new technologies that ASO partners should take advantage of.
  • Passive Networking and Social Utilization – ASO partners are always testing, trying new things, building new concepts and being ready for whats next.
  • “Life Boat Drills”  - Always be testing and looking for points of failure so that you can fix it quickly and put your clients in a position to capitalize on changes on the internet.
Be sure to watch the video to hear more on what Benjamin has to say about SEO for 2012 and check out more videos on SEO in the member library. Not a WebDesign.com member yet?  Check out the membership options!

Security Tips for Your WordPress Site from the Sucuri Pros: Free Webinar

As part of our Make Waves campaign for 2012, we believe every WordPress site should be safe and secure. This means not only having a backup strategy, but also making sure your site is clean of malware and security holes.

In the last couple of months, we’ve seen an increase in hacked sites in our customer community. So we asked security expert Dre Armeda, CEO and co-founder at Sucuri, to share security tips for locking down your WordPress site via a free webinar on Wednesday, April 25 at 1 p.m. Central.

Signup for the WordPress Security webinar April 25 with Dre here

You’ll learn how to do basic garage cleaning on your WordPress site, what security hacks Sucuri is seeing and tips on helping reduce your site’s risk.

We’re very excited about Dre sharing these tips as we’ve had the Sucuri free SiteChecker in BackupBuddy for almost a year now and has helped our community immensely.

If you are unable to make this webinar, it will be recorded and posted both to iThemes.TV and to the Make Waves blog.  In the meantime, be sure to check out the Sucuri Security plans here and to check your site’s security with the free SiteChecker tool.
