Due to a family emergency, Benjamin Bradley will not be able to teach the WordPress Developers Course regularly scheduled for Jan. 13-15. It has been officially cancelled and will be rescheduled shortly. (Emails will go out to members when that new date is set.)
For those of you not on the webinar today, Benjamin’s father is in grave condition and he had to fly back to D.C. to be with his family. Please keep Benjamin and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Saddened to hear about Benjamin’s father. We will be keeping him and Benjamins family in our prayers for sure!
Will be posting updates when we get them to the community – thank you for caring for our Prof and his family!
How does that work with Builder and the child themes?
How does what work with Builder and child themes?
As usual, I believe this to be above and beyond our expectations and thank you for all you do for your community.
Hi Lisa,
Can you take us through the steps you use to create a Multisite for your business and one for your clients dev. I recently got Coda and looking at local MAMP set up and version control .. I like to assess the options before I dive deeply.
Thanks!
Benjamin, so sorry to hear about your dad… Praying for you and your family!
Thank you for the awesome session on Multisites today! Can’t believe over so quickly! Looking forward to this surprise session tomorrow. Would like to ask about setting up a Wiki. Can you recommend some good options to try?
I’m a huge fan of Builder and use for all my work. I see the Child Themes are updated regularly but I’ll lose my style settings if I update the Child Theme. What’s the value of updating? Do you recommend?
Would also appreciate some tips on keeping your site secure. One of my colleagues has a large site that has been infected with malware. What’s the best way to get rid of it and keep safe?
Thanks again!
Lisa, today was awesome. Please forgive my greediness re: all my questions! But this is a once in a lifetime chance to ask you questions like this! And I haven’t been at that bptest site yet – so you may yet get EVEN MORE questions by morning!
1. if you make a basic site with plugins/themes to use for new sites – would it make sense to include an activated MS install in that, even if you mightn’t use it – or are there reasons not to do that?
Can you talk a little more about pulling from the blog onto the front page
Can you list all blogs on the front page like a table of contents?
if you make a basic site with plugins/themes to use for new sites – that you zip up and use BackUp Buddy to put on different sites – would it make sense to include an activated MS install in that, even if you mightn’t use it – or are there reasons not to do that?
The domain mapping was clear at the beginning – but it got confusing when you got to the part when the blog user came into the process. Could you go over that again?
Which Multisite plugins do you use?
Could you go over NETWORK ENABLE options for themes & plugins once more and what that means. It’s uclear because WP only offers the one option – so there is no clue about the what happens if you don’t choose it.
Can you chooses a network favicon and how.
Could you go over these 2 Network Settings again:
Registration Settings
Enable administration menus
What are your favorite plugins?
I meant pulling from the blogS to the front page.
And BuddyPress, BuddyPress, BuddyPress!
And most of all – that “how to pull info to the front page to show how rich the site is with content and contributors.
Lisa, good morning! As threatened, I’m back!
Today, would you talk to us about PRIVACY? This organization for the 300+ volunteer, Non-Profit I’m setting up the Multisite for, has HUGE privacy concerns. They don’t want anyone but members reading anything on the site/ blogs. Is there a way to limit viewers to those who are signed in members? They also want their member directory online – but are super concerned that no one but a member have access. What is the best way to protect that specific information?
And again, yesterday was truly incredible. Thank you.
Yesterday’s session was great. Looking forward to BP. Should be awesome seminar too!
New Depot theme, how to (easily) change the navigation bar and some of the other default background images to make it look more “custom”
How to migrate existing php based community (4,000+ profiles) to BP? Also, is there an upper limit to any aspect of BP….number of profiles, server load issues, etc?
my current site http://cancermatch.com We want to migrate it to BP.
Can you prohibit people under a certain age, or geographic area from creating a profile?
Can you require people to fill out certain questions when applying for a profile?
Can you have multiple static page/content pages on a BP site? Like creating a hybrid content/bp site
Never mind….I see the answer in the example you just gave of tastykitchen.com TY
Are there any issues integrating Builder and BuddyPress? Or any other issues with plugins that you know of?
I’ll have Chris Jean answer that in the iThemes Q&A.
Can members search for other members based on criteria ?eg can members search for other members of certain state or certain answer to profile question? Also, can members search for other members with a boolean search of the content that members have posted, like a google search?
With regard to BuddyPress, is there a good deal of customization that must be done to have your BuddyPress features look like your site theme? I ask because there are plugins (like GenesisConnect) that are supposed to make it easier (if you’re using the Genesis Framework). Not sure how Builder and BuddyPress integrate. Just wondering how intensive the customization might be.
Ok, I think I get it now. Out of the box, BuddyPress has the default theme. If we have a custom theme or a premium theme on our site, we will have to customize quite a bit to have it integrate with BuddyPress (i.e. templates, functions, etc.). So, plugins that help integrate BuddyPress with your theme may lessen the customization you need to do (except for the styling). Is that correct?
Thanks so much!
Not sure if this is the place to ask but: has anyone thought about using Builder and detecting whether a website visitor is browsing on a mobile platform so the site serves a “mobile-friendly” layout? This is one of my concerns about adding the BuddyPress functionality. How would it look on, say, an iPhone platform?
Can the information entered in a profile field be exported by admin into a cvs file, eg, collecting email addresses for use on aweber?
What is security risk or running this system? Just worry about the liability.
Does Buddypress work with ithemes backupbuddy???
@LSW if you have an age requirement for joining I see you can add Birthdate required, how do you make registration conditional?
what is the easiest way to stay in direct touch with my BP community, send out newsletters, or email to members from a particular state or age group, from my admin?
Question for afternoon Q&A:
I have a client with a need to set up private “minisites” from time to time. My questions:
1) is there a way I can have a single page in the admin area where the admin can specify the categories, navbar choices, and users allowed to access, when completed and submitted will create the categories, navigation and user account?
2) Is WPMU a better solution for this? If so, same question as #1: is there a way to create a “one-page-setup” so a secretary can easily setup a new minisite?
3) Each minisite will always have the same categories and nav labels (e.g. Home|News|Contact), although they are unique to each minisite (so, site #1′s NEWS is a different category from site #2′s NEWS).
I’m wondering if there is a component that would allow this, or if a plugin could be created to accomplish the above? The goal is to allow a secretary to easily setup a minisite without having to go through all the normal separate steps (create the new site, create all the new categories, create a new menu with all the navchoices to all the new categories, create a new user and give them permission to access the new site/categories, create a new moderator with admin access to only the new site’s categories, etc.)
Is there an “easier” way to do this? Thanks!
When handing over a site to a client, I usually site down and go through the WordPress admin area and show them the features that they will be using. I also show them how to make a post, create new categories or pages, add photos, etc.
Inevitably, I get a phone call asking me to remind them how to do something. I’d like to use Camtasia to record my “tutorials” specific to their site, then upload the videos to my AmazonS3 account and include something in the client’s WordPress Admin area so they could click on a “Tutorials” link and be able to watch the videos.
I know there are some monthly paid video solutions already out there, but they are for generic WordPress tutorials and don’t include either videos of my clients’ specific sites or my branding within the videos.
Is there a plugin that will allow me to add a “Tutorials” or “Demo” link in a site’s admin area, then link either to local videos or AmazonS3 videos?
Thanks!
