Does Your SEO Prepare You For The Future?

In SEO in 2012, today’s luncheon conversation with WebDesign.com, The “Professor” Benjamin Bradley introduced the concept of Advanced Search Optimization. Unlike many of the technical teaching webinars, this was more of a conversation about positioning and what web designers (and website owners) ought to be thinking about as they look to position their business within the broader market, always keeping the future in mind.

Basic search engine optimization focuses on writing good content, getting quality links, performing the day-to-day optimization tasks and how to read stats. This is what most “SEO Experts” focus on when providing SEO service to their clients. While this is great…the question is, does this really prepare you to deal with the future?

Advanced Search Optimization focuses more on what is yet to come with the entire Brand Value in mind, not just the day to day search engine ranking.

Someone employing Advanced Search Optimization (ASO):

  • understands trends – to help predict future events and circumstances, and how you’ll respond to those changing trends and be positioned to solve new problems (even before they happen, sometimes)
  • builds resources – so they are prepared to deal with surprise events, such as changing SEO algorithms or attacks on your brand, so that search engine ranking doesn’t suffer, or bounced back quickly in times of change
  • utilizes metrics – to understand the bigger picture, make forward-thinking decisions and to put the brand value in context

and uses SEO to enhance their already-existing brand value.

There was a LOT of information and philosophical perspective shared in this webinar so you’ll probably want to watch the replay.  It will be posted to the blog in an upcoming post and will also be available for viewing in the member library.

Members can log in and view the registration link on the Events page.

Can Knowing Yourself Better Make You a Better Business Person?

One of our core values at the iThemes family of companies is … learn and grow, then teach and share.

We believe in investing in each of our team members … and say that no one should be plateaued … we should have no “flatliners” on our team … each of us individually should be on an upward path of learning.

This is part of our core philosophy, as well as part of our Make Waves 2012 Manifesto.

LifeDev is about taking the core values, philosophies and best practices we teach and coach internally and sharing that with our customer community.  It will be a 10-month program and each month will have a theme to go with it. Through the program we’ll be announcing special webinars, blog posts and other resources to help you learn and grow.

You can sign up to be a part of LifeDev and get the latest updates.

Our kickoff webinar will be Wednesday, March 21 at noon Central Standard Time.

Why talk about personal development when you’re trying to run a business?

Cory Miller, iThemes founder & CEO, will be talking about StrengthsFinder and Myers-Briggs and how they have shaped his life and career and how we’ve used it internally on our team for more efficient and happy people.

We’ll do about 30 minutes of presentation followed by 30 minutes of discussion and Q&A.

Come ready to share and discuss.  (The recording will be posted to the LifeDev Blog (as well as iThemesTV) afterward.)

What you want to do beforehand:

    • Buy StrengthsFinder book (or Kindle version). The book is where you get the coupon for the online assessment and it costs around $14.
    • Take the online assessment at StrengthsFinder.com. Find about 30 minutes of quiet, undisturbed time to take the assessment. This will give you a report with your top 5 strengths and descriptions. (By the way, Cory and his wife Lindsey have found this a great resource for their marriage – so you might ask your significant other to do so with you for talking points! Cory will share more about this in the webinar.)
    • Read up on your top Strengths. The StrengthsFinder book has descriptions, Ideas for Action and more. Study these and take notes of how you see these strengths being used in your life, career, etc.
    • Overachievers will also take the Kiersey Sorter. This costs around $20 for the full assessment and is based on the Myers-Briggs Personality Test. We will be touching on this during the webinar. You take the free version first, then you’ll be asked if you want the full paid report, which you want. Read over that. Take notes. Think deeply. Be ready to discuss.
    • Post your results on the Life Dev Blog at Make Waves! We can start the discussion now in our LifeDev community.

But join us even if you can’t get all these items done ahead of time.

WordPress Backup Wisdom From Nathan Ingram

Member contribution, from Nathan Ingram.

Nathan Ingram is a member of the WebDesign.com community. As a web developer and maintainer of many client sites, he has a special interest in WordPress backup solutions. He presented a comprehensive look at backup solutions at a recent WordCamp…

What makes a good backup system?

The 5 musts of any backup strategy.
Different people will have different ideas here, but There may be others you could include, but I’ve tried to make these broad enough so that everyone will agree.

1. A good backup is complete.
Believe it or not, there are quite a few backup plugins out there that only back up the WordPress database. That means, basically, just the words of your web site are backed up and nothing else. That’s like getting homeowners insurance that covers what’s inside your house, but not the house itself. A good backup solution should save my database, files, uploads, settings, widgets, and themes. Everything should be backed up.

2. A good backup is automatic.
A good backup needs to happen like clockwork. It needs to be like a heartbeat. It happens without me telling it to. If my backup strategy relies on me to log in and press a button, or if I have to stop my work to make it happen, that backup is never going to be made. Once it’s set up, a good backup happens automatically without me having to think about it again.

3. A good backup is reliable.
The backup I want is like a friendly old neighborhood dog. It’s always around with a wagging tale and always gets along with everybody. This is important because server compatibility is a real issue with WordPress backup plugins. A good solution needs to be compatible with a wide variety of hosts. It needs to be regularly updated so it stays compatible with the newest versions of WordPress and the newest trends in web hosting. And if you have a problem, there should be a responsive support mechanism that puts you in contact with the developers. Whichever backup solution you select, you should be able to rely on it to work not only today, but down the road as well. With no worries.

4. A good backup is portable.
Zipping up all your files and storing them on your server is great… as long as the server stays up. But what happens if the entire server is lost? It’s a rare but possible scenario. A good backup should have as part of its routine the ability to push backed up data offsite. It should do this automatically and offer lots of options on where the archives should be stored.

5. A good backup is simple.
A backup is no good that’s too complicated to set up, or so confusing that you’re not sure if you’ve set it up correctly. A good backup will be easy to set up. It shouldn’t require fiddling with cron jobs on the server or FTPing something somewhere, or chmodding anything at all. And when the day finally comes when you have to restore a broken site, the restore process should be easy and wizard driven. If the restore process involves phpMyAdmin, I’m not interested. Make it easy, please.

Check out Nathan’s extensive backup solution comparison chart, plus his WorryProof WordPress report/presentation from the WordCamp. While BackupBuddy is far and away his favorite solution (mostly for the reasons listed above), in the report you’ll see his honest and fair assessment of other notable plugins as well.
