The 9th WordPress Developer Course is about to kick off for WebDesign.com members, December 9–14, 2013. This course is a week-long event that covers many different aspects of developing with WordPress as your platform.
This WordPress Developer Course is unique because we’ll focus on building a functioning, interactive website for a musical band that is on tour. During the course of building the site, we will learn all necessary code and functionality requirements.
A site like this requires a number of unique features that will extend WordPress, including:
- a “fan club” membership section
- an audio-vault with purchasable downloads and shipped products
- an event participation section where fans can “sign-in” to connect with people going to specific concerts
By understanding the WordPress loop, custom post types, post format styling, setting up the wp-config.php and building our own functions, this site can easily be built. We’ll also cover how to customize the Local SEO for the site to enable the band to get the maximum search traffic while on tour and so much more. Attendees of this 9th WordPress Developer Course will walk away with the knowledge of how to extend WordPress the right way and with the best results.
So how will this course be scheduled? Over the course of the entire week (Monday – Saturday), there will be eight different sessions. Everything will be taught online and members of WebDesign.com will need to sign up for ALL the sessions that they would like to attend.
The schedule for the week is as follows:
(Session 1) Setting Up WordPress Correctly – Monday, December 9th, 10am-Noon (CST)
During this opening session we will walk through the power that is hidden in the wp-config.php file so that we can have a solid foundation from which to build our site. We will also talk about server setups and other important pieces of information you need to consider when building a WordPress-powered site.
(Session 2) Custom Post Types and Post Format Styling – Monday, December 9th, 4pm-6pm (CST)
The site we will be building during the WordPress Developer Course is not a simple/basic WordPress site so we will need to extend the capabilities of the site. We will do this by constructing some custom post types to hold unique pieces of content as well as styling specific types of posts to better fit into the structure of the site.
(Session 3) Setting up Ecommerce and a Variety of Products – Tuesday, December 10th, 4pm-6pm (CST)
You need a solid solution that can handle downloadable products, membership capabilities, and shipping physical products while staying out of the way of the rest of the site. We will learn the necessary building blocks of code to make this a reality.
(Session 4) Designing the Event Participation Area – Wednesday, December 11th, 4pm-6pm (CST)
This is a very unique aspect to the site. The band members can update their website with events and concerts that they will be performing, but we will also build the ability for “fans” to check-in to events to help connect with other fans and the band.
(Session 5) Building the Fan Club – Thursday, December 12th, 4pm-6pm (CST)
Simply selling a product isn’t the only thing a band does with their website. Fans like to feel special and to be a part of some exclusive area. So we will walk through the process of building a membership section into the website.
(Session 6) Digging into the Best Plugins – Friday, December 13th, 4pm-6pm (CST)
This is one of the favorite sessions in all the past WordPress Developer Courses. During this time we will discuss the best WordPress plugins that are available to you and we will also look at the rated value to you as a developer who does client work.
(Session 7) Local SEO Targeting – Saturday, December 14th, 9am-10am (CST)
A touring band’s ability to target locations where they are performing so that they show up in search engines is vital for them to increase their fan base. We will talk about methods of constructing your SEO to take advantage of the local market.
(Session 8) Before You Launch… – Saturday, December 14th, 11am-Noon (CST)
There are a number of things any site developer needs to do before they turn the site over to a client. We will discuss those checklists and ensure that you are not leaving any money on the table with your clients.
